Specifications of knitting model, stitchTechnique, swatch and swatched knitting model are puclicly available and described in the SoftKnit21 open source framework. They are described using the standard langage for XSD schemas. Thus anyone can produce a software to encode and decode these items in xml, using an open source software to encode and decode XML descriptions.

Designers and producers using Kniterate Machines can benefit from Ludd21 services such as on demand knitwear production. It just requires that Kniterate design Software integrates an XML decoder for SoftKnit21 knitting models and stitchtechniques to produce Kniterate machine langage instructions.

Ludd21 does not offer design software and is somehow complementary to DAK. Because SoftKnit21 software exchanges messages directly with the electronic interface of manual knitting machines, it can provide very detailed assistance to the knitter; in particular, it can help in case of error and if unraveling rows happens to become necessary. With a converter from DAK proprietary format to SoftKnit21 framework formats, users could get the best of both worlds. If you are a DAK user, and are interested in SoftKnit21 let us know or consider sending a request to your local DAK software vendor.

Carnegie Mellon University developped a publicly available generic language which can be used to program automatic knitting machines. This langage has a front end for Kniterate Machines and for ShimaSeiki knitting machines.
